I Am The Light Of The World

As you practice the Workbook of A Course In Miracles there can be one line that really stands out. This is a personal experience. It is simply a combination of words that touch something in you, open something up, that strike you like lightning, that lift you out of your sequential thinking.

Humility consists of accepting your role in salvation and in taking no other.

Look at this sentence for a moment, feel the singularity of it, the certainty of it. This is the truth. It takes away the idea of choice, the idea of two. It’s surrender. It’s trust. Any word can offer this experience to you, any sentence. Use it. Let it work in you.

Who is the light of the world except God’s Son? This, then, is merely a statement of the truth about yourself. It is the opposite of a statement of pride, of arrogance, or of self-deception. It does not describe the self-concept you have made. It does not refer to any of the characteristics with which you have endowed your idols. It refers to you as you were created by God. It simply states the truth.

To the ego, today’s idea is the epitome of self-glorification. But the ego does not understand humility, mistaking it for self-debasement. Humility consists of accepting your role in salvation and in taking no other. It is not humility to insist you cannot be the light of the world if that is the function God assigned to you. It is only arrogance that would assert this function cannot be for you, and arrogance is always of the ego.

True humility requires that you accept today’s idea because it is God’s Voice which tells you it is true. This is a beginning step in accepting your real function on earth. It is a giant stride toward taking your rightful place in salvation. It is a positive assertion of your right to be saved, and an acknowledgment of the power that is given you to save others.

It’s beautiful how you are shown that it is humility to accept your function as the light of the world. It takes away any idea of arrogance and you start to recognize that remembering who you are is really a surrender to this moment, here and now. It is acceptance of a situation, an event, a person, a reaction. This doesn’t mean that you are neutral in any way, it is simply an acceptance of causation and a trust that as you see your brother truly, you will be shown what to say and do.

You will want to think about this idea as often as possible today. It is the perfect answer to all illusions, and therefore to all temptation. It brings all the images you have made about yourself to the truth, and helps you depart in peace, unburdened and certain of your purpose.

As many practice periods as possible should be undertaken today, although each one need not exceed a minute or two. They should begin with telling yourself:

I am the light of the world. That is my only function. That is why I am here.

Then think about these statements for a short while, preferably with your eyes closed if the situation permits. Let a few related thoughts come to you, and repeat the idea to yourself if your mind wanders away from the central thought.

Think about what you are shown. Point your mind, your thoughts, in that direction. Let the light in. Let it work in you and let it extend through you. You are the light of the world. It is your function. But you can’t fulfill your function if you forget it. Focus on it, remember it, let it be a natural extension of you. As you remember your function as the light of the world, every image disappears, the body disappears. this world disappears. It is simply being, beyond having an idea.

Be sure both to begin and end the day with a practice period. Thus you will awaken with an acknowledgment of the truth about yourself, reinforce it throughout the day, and turn to sleep as you reaffirm your function and your only purpose here. These two practice periods may be longer than the rest, if you find them helpful and want to extend them.

Remember. Remember. It’s an inward recognition. It’s between you and God. It is eternal. It is the truth.

Today’s idea goes far beyond the ego’s petty views of what you are and what your purpose is. As a bringer of salvation, this is obviously necessary. This is the first of a number of giant steps we will take in the next few weeks. Try today to begin to build a firm foundation for these advances. You are the light of the world. God has built His plan for the salvation of His Son on you.

Lesson 83

There is really nothing left but to teach this message. Once you are in the experience of A Course In Miracles, you have to give it away. You have to give what you have received. You have to teach it to learn it. This goes beyond concepts, it is an experience. Once the light has entered, you have to extend it. If you hold on to it, try to keep it for yourself, or deny it, the darkness will be doubly dark.

Today’s review lesson shows you that you have a function that God gave you, and that your happiness lies in the fulfillment of that function. It is great to look at these lessons.

My only function is the one God gave me.
I have no function but the one God gave me. This recognition releases me from all conflict, because it means I cannot have conflicting goals. With one purpose only, I am always certain what to do, what to say and what to think. All doubt must disappear as I acknowledge that my only function is the one God gave me.

My happiness and my function are one.
All things that come from God are one. They come from Oneness, and must be received as one. Fulfilling my function is my happiness because both come from the same Source. And I must learn to recognize what makes me happy, if I would find happiness.

As you read these lessons and apply them, as you feel them working in you, one thing becomes perfectly clear. God has given you a function and there is nothing outside of that. You are then shown that this is where your happiness lies. Notice how the next lesson does not single out the word happiness, as if it has a value on its own. Your tendency will always be to give these lessons the meaning that they have for you. But read them, let them reveal themselves to you, and they will tell you what they mean. Today you are shown that your happiness lies only in doing your function, and nowhere else. You are not asked to define what happiness is. You are simply reminded that by doing your function, by letting God be God, your remember your Source and you become happy. It’s effortless. It doesn’t require any definition whatsoever. It is simply the acceptance of the truth of what you are. You are as God created you. You have a function. It is the only thing that will make you happy. It’s time to put your toys away and to be about your Father’s business.
