Review Lesson 120

I rest in God

The beauty of today’s review lesson is the peace and rest it offers. In you is a place of respite from the world you see, a quiet place that is the altar of God, your natural inheritance that is your complete dependence on your Creator. These lessons are not just words that you repeat to yourself in the morning and that make you feel good for a moment, after which you continue getting lost in the turmoil of your existence in time and space. They are not concepts which you are asked to intellectually understand and then lay aside. These words offer you a real experience, if you let them.

(109) I rest in God.

I rest in God today, and let Him work in me and
through me, while I rest in Him in quiet and in
perfect certainty.

(110) I am as God created me.

I am God’s Son. Today I lay aside all sick illusions of
myself, and let my Father tell me Who I really am.

You have to, somewhere, want more than just a flimsy moment of feeling good. God’s will for you is perfect happiness, and perfect happiness has nothing to do with time and space, nothing to do with a body, nothing to do with this world. It is an experience of remembering who you truly are, and it is given by God as you direct your mind to the truth of the words you speak today. Once you have this experience, it is something you can always go back to when you forget. As Jesus tells you in the introduction to these lessons:

In these reviews, we stress the need to let your learning not lie idly by between your longer practice periods.  Attempt to give your daily two ideas a brief but serious review each hour.  Use one on the hour, and the other one a half an hour later.  You need not give more than just a moment to each one.  Repeat it, and allow your mind to rest a little time in silence and in peace.  Then turn to other things, but try to keep the thought with you, and let it serve to help you keep your peace throughout the day as well.

If you are shaken, think of it again.  These practice periods are planned to help you form the habit of applying what you learn each day to everything you do.  Do not repeat the thought and lay it down.  Its usefulness is limitless to you.  And it is meant to serve you in all ways, all times and places, and whenever you need help of any kind.  Try, then, to take it with you in the business of the day and make it holy, worthy of God’s Son, acceptable to God and to your Self.

It is a practice, this is why it is called a mind training. The workbook lessons help you to keep your mind focused on God, they offer you a frame of reference for the truth in you, but the application of the lesson is up to you. The more you offer this Course, the more it offers you. The more you apply your mind to it, the more you experience the simplicity and effortlessness of remembering Who you are. There is an experience available to you that goes beyond the world you see altogether, and it is this you truly want.

Do not forget how little you have learned.
Do not forget how much you can learn now.
Do not forget your Father’s need of you,
As you review these thoughts He gave to you.

On the hour:
I rest in God.

On the half hour:
I am as God created me.

Love Created Me Like Itself

loveoneness

Today’s idea is a complete and accurate statement of what you are. This is why you are the light of the world. This is why God appointed you as the world’s savior. This is why the Son of God looks to you for his salvation. He is saved by what you are. We will make every effort today to reach this truth about you, and to realize fully, if only for a moment, that it is the truth.

The workbook in A Course In Miracles keeps telling you think about the lesson of the day, to let related thoughts come to you. This is because the mind is always active. You are thinking all the time. In fact, the moment of stillness, the collapse into the black hole of your mind, is your greatest fear. Because when you quiet your mind, you will remember God. And even though you tell yourself that you are not afraid of God, the very fact that you keep filling your mind with meaningless thoughts and you keep yourself busy with things that are entirely unimportant, actively shows how afraid you really are to be still, to let the light in, to remember your Creator and your Self.

In the longer practice period, we will think about your reality and its wholly unchanged and unchangeable nature. We will begin by repeating this truth about you, and then spend a few minutes adding some relevant thoughts, such as:

Holiness created me holy.

Kindness created me kind.

Helpfulness created me helpful.

Perfection created me perfect.

As you practice this lesson and say the words, you experience that holiness, kindness, helpfulness, perfection and love are revealed to you as you step back and let the words be exactly what they are. You are not asked to fill in the blanks. This is not a doing, it is an undoing. Your idea of holiness has nothing to do with holiness. The same goes for kindness and helpfulness. What you deem to be kind and helpful enables the idea of sickness and death. Your idea about perfection is merely arrogance. Once you realize you do not know, you can be shown who you truly are. It is given. It is a remembering not of your doing. Only application of the lesson is required, and you simply receive the gifts of God.

Any attribute which is in accord with God as He defines Himself is appropriate for use. We are trying today to undo your definition of God and replace it with His Own. We are also trying to emphasize that you are part of His definition of Himself.

After you have gone over several such related thoughts, try to let all thoughts drop away for a brief preparatory interval, and then try to reach past all your images and preconceptions about yourself to the truth in you. If love created you like itself, this Self must be in you. And somewhere in your mind It is there for you to find.

You let all thoughts drop away for an instant, and on that clean slate your true Identity is written for you. It can’t be found among the senseless thoughts with which you preoccupy your mind. It is found in the space between your thoughts; in the quiet, the stillness, the willingness to receive.

You may find it necessary to repeat the idea for today from time to time to replace distracting thoughts. You may also find that this is not sufficient, and that you need to continue adding other thoughts related to the truth about yourself. Yet perhaps you will succeed in going past that, and through the interval of thoughtlessness to the awareness of a blazing light in which you recognize yourself as love created you. Be confident that you will do much today to bring that awareness nearer, whether you feel you have succeeded or not.

Love created me like itself. This is the thought that saves you today. It is the inspiration for true thoughts, for thoughts of God. It offers you the awareness of a blazing light that you have been searching for since the beginning of time. The mind training of A Course In Miracles offers you a remembering of yourself as God created you. It is that simple. And you can’t fail. With the help of God beside you, how could you fail? Try not to measure if you are succeeding, but realize that your limited ideas about yourself can’t possibly help you to remember your magnitude in God. Don’t look outside of yourself for verification of any kind, simply let God be. Love created you like itself. This is the truth.

Review Lesson 1 – 5

lighterrr

Today you are asked to look again at the first 5 lessons of the workbook in A Course In Miracles. As you read them, think about them, let them work in you, you start to recognize the incredible offering of this mind training. It is the undoing of the way that you see now, the recognition of the meaninglessness of what you perceive. As you let go of the way you see, vision is revealed to you.

1) Nothing I see means anything.
The reason this is so is that I see nothing, and nothing has no meaning. It is necessary that I recognize this, that I may learn to see. What I think I see now is taking the place of vision. I must let it go by realizing it has no meaning, so that vision may take its place.

(2) I have given what I see all the meaning it has for me.
I have judged everything I look upon, and it is this and only this I see. This is not vision. It is merely an illusion of reality, because my judgments have been made quite apart from reality. I am willing to recognize the lack of validity in my judgments, because I want to see. My judgments have hurt me, and I do not want to see according to them.

(3) I do not understand anything I see.
How could I understand what I see when I have judged it amiss? What I see is the projection of my own errors of thought. I do not understand what I see because it is not understandable. There is no sense in trying to understand it. But there is every reason to let it go, and make room for what can be seen and understood and loved. I can exchange what I see now for this merely by being willing to do so. Is not this a better choice than the one I made before?

The first 3 lessons are about seeing. Seeing and believing are very closely related. You will see what you believe about yourself. In the text you have been shown “Projection makes perception. The world you see is what you gave it.” You have a thought, you then project it outside of you and so it seems to be real. In truth, what you see has no reality. And so you are directed inward, to your thoughts, because when you change your mind you will see differently.

(4) These thoughts do not mean anything.
The thoughts of which I am aware do not mean anything because I am trying to think without God. What I call “my” thoughts are not my real thoughts. My real thoughts are the thoughts I think with God. I am not aware of them because I have made my thoughts to take their place. I am willing to recognize that my thoughts do not mean anything, and to let them go. I choose to have them be replaced by what they were intended to replace. My thoughts are meaningless, but all creation lies in the thoughts I think with God.

You have real thoughts. They have nothing to do with what you think you are thinking now. Thoughts about space and time, sequential thoughts, simply cover up your real Thoughts. You have been practicing a thought system that has no reality, but today you will practice letting it go. Because you want your real Thoughts. You want to remember you are one with God.

(5) I am never upset for the reason I think.
I am never upset for the reason I think because I am constantly trying to justify my thoughts. I am constantly trying to make them true. I make all things my enemies, so that my anger is justified and my attacks are warranted. I have not realized how much I have misused everything I see by assigning this role to it. I have done this to defend a thought system that has hurt me, and that I no longer want. I am willing to let it go.

God Is The Light In Which I See

Active Mind at 3 a.m

You cannot see in darkness, and you cannot make light. You can make darkness and then think you see in it, but light reflects life, and is therefore an aspect of creation. Creation and darkness cannot coexist, but light and life must go together, being but different aspects of creation.

In order to see, you must recognize that light is within, not without. You do not see outside yourself, nor is the equipment for seeing outside you. An essential part of this equipment is the light that makes seeing possible. It is with you always, making vision possible in every circumstance.

Today’s idea continues with the theme that has been expressed in the previous lessons in the workbook of A Course In Miracles. You are asked to look directly at what you think seeing is. Vision has nothing to do with the body’s eyes. It goes beyond it altogether. There is a light in you that is eternal, unchangeable, it is your natural inheritance as you were created by God. Every lesson in the workbook offers you a thought that leads you directly to the light within.

Today we are going to attempt to reach that light. For this purpose, we will use a form of exercise which has been suggested before, and which we will utilize increasingly. It is a particularly difficult form for the undisciplined mind, and represents a major goal of mind training. It requires precisely what the untrained mind lacks. Yet this training must be accomplished if you are to see.

It is a mind training. This is very much emphasized in the text. It is a re-directing of your focus from outward to inward. When the light in you is recognized, you will see it everywhere. But an untrained mind can accomplish nothing. And so Jesus tells you in the text:

All learning involves attention and study at some level. This course is a MIND- TRAINING course. Good students assign study periods for themselves. However, since this obvious step has not occurred to you, and since we are cooperating in this, I will make the obvious assignment now.

You’ve got some homework to do. You need to take time, effort, focus to learn what this course actually offers you. As you learn it, everything that you have overlearned in the past simply disappears because its meaninglessness is recognized.

Your mind is no longer wholly untrained. You are quite ready to learn the form of exercise we will use today, but you may find that you will encounter strong resistance. The reason is very simple. While you practice in this way, you leave behind everything that you now believe, and all the thoughts that you have made up. Properly speaking, this is the release from hell. Yet perceived through the ego’s eyes, it is loss of identity and a descent into hell.

Stand here for a moment and tremble not. You will be led directly into fear, but you will not be left there. This is directly from the course, and it is the fact of the matter. You will be directed to places in your mind that you have been unwilling to go to. And now you will go there, but not linger. Simply stand still and let all your beliefs and ideas be undone. This is a continuous process, it never stops. You, as a savior of the world. recognize your responsibility for what you see and you are allowing it to be undone in you. It is all that is required.

Preparation and Careful Watching

In Chapter 1 of A Course In Miracles Jesus gives you some important instructions that are easily overlooked.

This is a course in mind training. All learning involves attention and study at some level. Some of the later parts of the course rest too heavily on these earlier sections not to require their careful study. You will also need them for preparation. Without this, you may become much too fearful of what is to come to make constructive use of it.  However, as you study these earlier sections, you will begin to see some of the implications that will be amplified later on.

This doesn’t mean that you sit down behind a desk and study as you do in university. It is not about repeating the words until you can repeat them without thinking. It means that the activity of your mind has to be involved in this. Your mind is not neutral, you think all the time. Your thoughts have to be included in with this course, it is there that the change will take place. It is there that you can give the little effort of preparation, the little willingness, so that God can take the last step and you are not bound by fear of your own making.

Some of the later steps in this course involve a more direct approach to God Himself. It would be unwise to start on these steps without careful preparation, or awe will be confused with fear, and the experience will be more traumatic than beatific.

What Jesus offers you here is the power of your mind in this course. He is asking you to pay attention, while at the same time stressing the importance of preparation. He shows you the little effort that will help you in this course in mind training. They are simple instructions, but incredibly powerful.

Healing is of God in the end. The means are being carefully explained to you. Revelation may occasionally reveal the end to you, but to reach it the means are needed.

The means are provided by you. The little practice, the willingness to be vigilant. In the practice of the workbook, in doing the lessons every day, there is always the tendency to forget the lesson during the day. Jesus tells you not to worry about it, you simply start over. But in these last two days he again mentions the power of preparation and adds the gift of careful watching.

Lesson 136 ~ Sickness is a defense against the truth

The body’s health is fully guaranteed, because it is not limited by time, by weather or fatigue, by food and drink, or any laws you made it serve before. You need do nothing now to make it well, for sickness has become impossible.
Yet this protection needs to be preserved by careful watching. If you let your mind harbor attack thoughts, yield to judgment or make plans against uncertainties to come, you have again misplaced yourself, and made a bodily identity which will attack the body, for the mind is sick.

Lesson 137 ~ When I am healed, I am not healed alone

We will remember, as the hour strikes, our function is to let our minds be healed, that we may carry healing to the world, exchanging curse for blessing, pain for joy, and separation for the peace of God. Is not a minute of the hour worth the giving to receive a gift like this? Is not a little time a small expense to offer for the gift of everything?
Yet must we be prepared for such a gift.

It is not enough to simply practice the lesson in the morning and then go about your day thinking God will take care of the rest. Your mind is required in this. It is up to you to remember that nothing you see means anything, and that is only lesson 1. Whenever your mind wanders into judgment, it is up to you to call it back and remember this course. You decide to apply the lessons and the text to get the full benefit of A Course In Miracles. Call it vigilance, call it keeping your eye on the ball, but if you don’t apply the lesson, if you don’t actively remember that you are as God created you, no one is going to do it for you.

So today, listen to Jesus. Apply the lesson as he requests and give yourself the gift of heaven, of your awakening. You are always tempted to be satisfied with far too little. Today, give yourself the gift of everything through preparation and careful watching.

My mind is part of God’s. I am very holy

Today’s idea does not describe the way you see yourself now. It does, however, describe what vision will show you. It is difficult for anyone who thinks he is in this world to believe this of himself. Yet the reason he thinks he is in this world is because he does not believe it.

My mind is part of God’s. I am very holy.

Say today’s lesson out loud and you may think it sounds arrogant. You may think that in no way can you declare yourself as being very holy. But the fact is that you are created by God, in His likeness. The declaration of today’s lesson states the truth about yourself. Your mind is part of God’s, because what is created by God is of God. And you are very holy, because you are as God created you.

The idea for today presents a very different view of yourself. By establishing your Source it establishes your Identity, and it describes you as you must really be in truth.

It’s a beautiful thing. You have confused cause and effect and now it is reversed into the true order. You are the cause of what you see, the world you see is simply the effect of your idea about yourself. Believe that you are separate from God and a world arises to support that. Declare that your mind is part of God’s, you are very holy, and vision is given you. Be honest with yourself today, apply the lesson to whatever you believe about yourself, good or bad, right or wrong.

I see myself as imposed on.
I see myself as depressed.
I see myself as failing.
I see myself as endangered.
I see myself as helpless.
I see myself as victorious.
I see myself as losing out.
I see myself as charitable.
I see myself as virtuous.

And then let it all go.

But my mind is part of God’s. I am very holy.

You don’t have to believe it, simply apply it. Your understanding is not required, it is in fact completely unnecessary. And that is the good news. These words will do the work, because they are given by God. They need no help whatsoever, only the little willingness to say them as often as possible today.

My mind is preoccupied with past thoughts

This idea is, of course, the reason why you see only the past. No one really sees anything. 3 He sees only his thoughts projected outward. The mind’s preoccupation with the past is the cause of the misconception about time from which your seeing suffers. Your mind cannot grasp the present, which is the only time there is. It therefore cannot understand time, and cannot, in fact, understand anything.

This is gentle Jesus reminding you that you do not understand anything. It is amazing how such a gentle tone, such beautiful words, can express an immediate truth and experience. It hits you right in the face, which just shows you that you don’t need to raise your voice to make a point. Truth is true and nothing else is true. When true words are spoken or written, you recognize them immediately, they resonate in you, it is cellular experience. Hearing the truth raises the frequency in you, everything starts vibrating at a higher level, you are more alert, more open. Your understanding is not required. It is simply an experience.

The one wholly true thought one can hold about the past is that it is not here. To think about it at all is therefore to think about illusions. Very few have realized what is actually entailed in picturing the past or in anticipating the future. The mind is actually blank when it does this, because it is not really thinking about anything.

The past is not here. That’s reasonable; you know this to be true. Then look at where Jesus takes your mind and it will be perfectly clear to you. You already know this, He is just reminding you. It’s not complicated, it takes no study. It is simply an immediate recognition. When you think about the past, you are not thinking about anything. Now you might want to decide that you want to use your mind differently and today’s lesson is just the tool for that.

The purpose of the exercises for today is to begin to train your mind to recognize when it is not really thinking at all.  While thoughtless ideas preoccupy your mind, the truth is blocked. Recognizing that your mind has been merely blank, rather than believing that it is filled with real ideas, is the first step to opening the way to vision.

I seem to be thinking about [name of a person], about [name of an object], about [name of an emotion], but my mind is preoccupied with past thoughts.

You are not really thinking about what you think you are thinking about. You are simply reliving the past, over and over and over again. You have done this every moment of every day. But no more. Today you will see things differently and you are in the happy recognition that you are in an awakening experience. What a miracle. There is no mistake about you finding A Course In Miracles, this book was brought to you because somewhere and somehow you asked for help. The help was given. Now it is up to you to use it, to stand in the active experience of it. It is indeed a whole new year, because you have decided to actually do the workbook of A Course In Miracles. It is the best decision you have ever made for yourself. It is the greatest gift that you have ever been given.

My mind is preoccupied with past thoughts.

I am upset because I see something that is not there.

The exercises with this idea are very similar to the preceding ones. Again, it is necessary to name both the form of upset (anger, fear, worry, depression and so on) and the perceived source very specifically for any application of the idea. For example:

I am angry at ___ because I see something that is not there.
I am worried about ___ because I see something that is not there.

You can’t get away with anything in this lesson, and that is the beauty of it. Jesus is asking you to look directly at your upset and He immediately gives you the key to let it go: it is not there.

You see what you want to see. This is the power of your mind. Projection makes perception and you do people the world you see with scenarios that you made up. You don’t have to understand today’s lesson, this is not about conceptual understanding, but you can accept it for a moment and let the truth of it be revealed to you.

There are no small upsets. They are all equally disturbing to my peace of mind.
I cannot keep this form of upset and let the others go. For the purposes of these exercises, then, I will regard them all as the same.

Just stay in the mind training. It does work. Each lesson is set up perfectly for the day that it is offered. There is no accident in any of it. Whatever upset may come up today: use it. It is the perfect platform for the lesson today.

I am upset because I see something that is not there.
