I am upset because I see a meaningless world

The importance of this idea lies in the fact that it contains a correction for a major perceptual distortion. You think that what upsets you is a frightening world, or a sad world, or a violent world, or an insane world. All these attributes are given it by you. The world is meaningless in itself.

What if you really applied today’s lesson? It is the simple request to take full responsibility for what you see and experience. You would stop blaming things outside of yourself for what is happening with you, you would let the healing occur in the only place it can actually happen: in you.

With A Course In Miracles in your hand, with the lesson for the day given you, you have been given everything you need for the change of your mind. You no longer insist that you are separate from God and everything around you, that you are the victim of what you see and experience. It is not true. You are responsible for what you see.

I think I see a fearful world, a dangerous world, a hostile world, a sad world, a wicked world, a crazy world, but I am upset because I see a meaningless world.

What is meaningless is neither good nor bad. Why, then, should a meaningless world upset you? If you could accept the world as meaningless and let the truth be written upon it for you, it would make you indescribably happy. But because it is meaningless, you are impelled to write upon it what you would have it be. It is this you see in it. It is this that is meaningless in truth. Beneath your words is written the Word of God.

So…

All your complaints: meaningless.

All your judgments: meaningless.

All your ideas: meaningless.

This includes the good and bad judgments, the good and bad ideas. You are simply wrong. You forgot the first 50 lessons of the workbook. Good thing you are starting over this year. It’s a clean slate, a blank mind. Now you can be shown, all you have to do is show up. All you have to do when you wake up in the morning is set your foot out of bed, Jesus will take care of the rest. There is no excuse to be late, or to not show up. This is your awakening, why wouldn’t you be fully present? It’s not about hiding in your cave, it’s about stepping out and applying the lesson. It’s active.

I am upset because I see a meaningless world.

I am upset because I see something that is not there.

The exercises with this idea are very similar to the preceding ones. Again, it is necessary to name both the form of upset (anger, fear, worry, depression and so on) and the perceived source very specifically for any application of the idea. For example:

I am angry at ___ because I see something that is not there.
I am worried about ___ because I see something that is not there.

You can’t get away with anything in this lesson, and that is the beauty of it. Jesus is asking you to look directly at your upset and He immediately gives you the key to let it go: it is not there.

You see what you want to see. This is the power of your mind. Projection makes perception and you do people the world you see with scenarios that you made up. You don’t have to understand today’s lesson, this is not about conceptual understanding, but you can accept it for a moment and let the truth of it be revealed to you.

There are no small upsets. They are all equally disturbing to my peace of mind.
I cannot keep this form of upset and let the others go. For the purposes of these exercises, then, I will regard them all as the same.

Just stay in the mind training. It does work. Each lesson is set up perfectly for the day that it is offered. There is no accident in any of it. Whatever upset may come up today: use it. It is the perfect platform for the lesson today.

I am upset because I see something that is not there.

I am never upset for the reason I think.

Well, there you have it. You are never upset for the reason you think. You think you know what is upsetting you and you give that all the meaning it has for you. Now you have placed the source of your upset outside of you and you are at the mercy of things you have no control over. This is how you have lived your life, and you have taught yourself that it is what life is. You were mistaken. Today you will see things differently.

I am never upset for the reason I think.

This idea, like the preceding one, can be used with any person, situation or event you think is causing you pain.

Notice how specific this lesson is. You are not asked to gloss over the emotion, to push it down and tell yourself that everything is okay and you are happy, happy, joy, joy. Instead you are asked to let the emotion rise to the surface, whatever it is. You are asked to look at what you think is causing this emotion and then you are offered the way to let it go.

There are no small upsets. They are all equally disturbing to my peace of mind.

I am never upset for the reason I think.

All you have to do is apply the lesson for today. Again, you are not asked to understand it or to add anything to it. Simply do as you are asked.

I am not angry at ___ for the reason I think.
I am not afraid of ___ for the reason I think.

I am not worried about ___ for the reason I think.
I am not depressed about ___ for the reason I think.

Have fun with this lesson. Look at everything that is going on in your mind, at everyone and everything you think it is related to. If you are angry, use it. If you are worried, use it. If you are depressed, use it. Help is right here, right now. All you have to do is be honest, so that all obstacles in your mind may be removed by a power greater than your own. There is a God.

I am never upset for the reason I think.
