Review Lesson 54

These review lessons are amazing. Their compactness makes them even more expansive. Read these lessons by themselves and they offer you an experience that is not of this world. Read them all together and you find yourself transported to something words can’t describe. You are going so high, there is no limit. And everything that you have read, heard and seen, comes together in one holy instant. You recognize the thoughts you used to value are simply clouds that have prevented you from experiencing the light that you are. You are going beyond these clouds now, and your purpose is holier than you realize. Jesus is standing with you, cheering you on, saying, “Go on, clouds can’t stop you!” And you happily oblige.

The lessons are showing you that you are free. You are no longer bound by your own thoughts. You experience the power of your mind, you are remembering an ancient melody that is calling you Home. What a great opportunity, what a wonderful gift. A Course In Miracles has been given you and you have a purpose that is not of this world. All are called, but few choose to listen. You have listened, and you are home in Heaven with your Father now.

(16) I have no neutral thoughts.
Neutral thoughts are impossible because all thoughts have power. They will either make a false world or lead me to the real one. But thoughts cannot be without effects. As the world I see arises from my thinking errors, so will the real world rise before my eyes as I let my errors be corrected. My thoughts cannot be neither true nor false. They must be one or the other. What I see shows me which they are.

(17) I see no neutral things.
What I see witnesses to what I think. If I did not think I would not exist, because life is thought. Let me look on the world I see as the representation of my own state of mind. I know that my state of mind can change. And so I also know the world I see can change as well.

(18) I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my seeing.
If I have no private thoughts, I cannot see a private world. Even the mad idea of separation had to be shared before it could form the basis of the world I see. Yet that sharing was a sharing of nothing. I can also call upon my real thoughts, which share everything with everyone. As my thoughts of separation call to the separation thoughts of others, so my real thoughts awaken the real thoughts in them. And the world my real thoughts show me will dawn on their sight as well as mine.

(19) I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my thoughts.
I am alone in nothing. Everything I think or say or do teaches all the universe. A Son of God cannot think or speak or act in vain. He cannot be alone in anything. It is therefore in my power to change every mind along with mine, for mine is the power of God.

(20) I am determined to see.
Recognizing the shared nature of my thoughts, I am determined to see. I would look upon the witnesses that show me the thinking of the world has been changed. I would behold the proof that what has been done through me has enabled love to replace fear, laughter to replace tears, and abundance to replace loss. I would look upon the real world, and let it teach me that my will and the Will of God are one.

Review Lesson 53

Lesson 53

Today’s review lessons are really a life saver. Jesus tells you in the Introduction that you will need your learning most in situations that appear to be upsetting, rather than in those that already seem to be calm and quiet. It’s easy to read the words to yourself when you are comfortable, they make perfect sense. But it is when everything is in uproar that you experience the true value of these lessons as you apply them to yourself.

(11) My meaningless thoughts are showing me a meaningless world.
Since the thoughts of which I am aware do not mean anything, the world that pictures them can have no meaning. What is producing this world is insane, and so is what it produces. Reality is not insane, and I have real thoughts as well as insane ones. I can therefore see a real world, if I look to my real thoughts as my guide for seeing.

(12) I am upset because I see a meaningless world.
Insane thoughts are upsetting. They produce a world in which there is no order anywhere. Only chaos rules a world that represents chaotic thinking, and chaos has no laws. I cannot live in peace in such a world. I am grateful that this world is not real, and that I need not see it at all unless I choose to value it. And I do not choose to value what is totally insane and has no meaning.

(13) A meaningless world engenders fear.
The totally insane engenders fear because it is completely undependable, and offers no grounds for trust. Nothing in madness is dependable. It holds out no safety and no hope. But such a world is not real. I have given it the illusion of reality, and have suffered from my belief in it. Now I choose to withdraw this belief, and place my trust in reality. In choosing this, I will escape all the effects of the world of fear, because I am acknowledging that it does not exist.

(14) God did not create a meaningless world.
How can a meaningless world exist if God did not create it? He is the Source of all meaning, and everything that is real is in His Mind. It is in my mind too, because He created it with me. Why should I continue to suffer from the effects of my own insane thoughts, when the perfection of creation is my home? Let me remember the power of my decision, and recognize where I really abide.

(15) My thoughts are images that I have made.
Whatever I see reflects my thoughts. It is my thoughts that tell me where I am and what I am. The fact that I see a world in which there is suffering and loss and death shows me that I am seeing only the representation of my insane thoughts, and am not allowing my real thoughts to cast their beneficent light on what I see. Yet God’s way is sure. The images I have made cannot prevail against Him because it is not my will that they do so. My will is His, and I will place no other gods before Him.

The recurring word being ‘meaningless’, these lessons offer you the experience that you are literally giving everything you see all the meaning it has for you. You value it, and so you see it. You don’t see what you don’t value, it is really that simple. So Jesus is working with your mind. This is no small thing. It is everything. And it does require some rigorous honesty. Finally you don’t concern yourself with appearances anymore. Idols fall away, be they persons or situations.

An awakened mind is open. It is absolutely aware of everything. It doesn’t deny pain, but looks directly at it, feels it and lets it be healed through the recognition of causation. It doesn’t teach something outside of itself that it is the cause of the pain it is feeling, it recognizes that it is Cause itself. There is indeed nothing outside you. Go inward. Let your mind be undone, let God’s Thoughts be uncovered in you. They are there. They are waiting for you.

I Will Accept My Part In God’s Plan For Salvation

Today’s lesson is the review of lessons 97 and 98.

(97) I am spirit.

I am the Son of God. No body can contain my spirit,
nor impose on me a limitation God created not.

(98) I will accept my part in God’s plan for salvation.

What can my function be but to accept the Word of God,
Who has created me for what I am and will forever be?

Great lessons, and in the introduction Jesus asks you to spend 5 minutes in the morning and in the evening reading these lessons, thinking about them, letting them work in you. And then to apply them during the day as well. He alludes to the power of your mind and says something that really struck me this morning.

Place the ideas within your mind, and let it use them as it chooses.  Give it faith that it will use them wisely, being helped in its decisions by the One Who gave the thoughts to you.  What can you trust but what is in your mind?  Have faith, in these reviews, the means the Holy Spirit uses will not fail.  The wisdom of your mind will come to your assistance.  Give direction at the outset; then lean back in quiet faith, and let the mind employ the thoughts you gave as they were given you for it to use.

A Course In Miracles is really the only book where the introductions are as amazing as the lessons themselves. What I love  is that it says, The wisdom of your mind will come to your assistance. It is so simple, the recognition that the answer is in you, and that the power of your mind as created by God will never fail you. What can you trust but what is in your mind?  Have faith, in these reviews, the means the Holy Spirit uses will not fail. For any answer to any problem that seems to confront you, you never have to look any further than your own mind. God placed the solution where the problem is. Have faith that what you have been given will never fail you. Trust these lessons, apply them as asked, and let them work in you and through you. This is how you recognize that the problem has been solved.

The exercises to be done throughout the day are equally important, and perhaps of even greater value.  You have been inclined to practice only at appointed times, and then go on your way to other things, without applying what you learned to them.  As a result, you have gained little reinforcement, and have not given your learning a fair chance to prove how great are its potential gifts to you.  Here is another chance to use it well.

So, to sum it all up, it is really completely up to you. However much you apply the lesson, in equal amount will it offer you what you give to it. When you recognize the power of your mind, when you see how much you have overlearned ideas and beliefs that have no reality, then you recognize simultaneously that you do need help. The help is given you in new ideas about yourself and the world, they are the lessons in the workbook. Apply them, use them, trust them, have faith in the Holy Spirit and in the wisdom of your mind. You are as God created you. It is a fact. Now let that knowledge reveal itself to you.

Preparation and Careful Watching

In Chapter 1 of A Course In Miracles Jesus gives you some important instructions that are easily overlooked.

This is a course in mind training. All learning involves attention and study at some level. Some of the later parts of the course rest too heavily on these earlier sections not to require their careful study. You will also need them for preparation. Without this, you may become much too fearful of what is to come to make constructive use of it.  However, as you study these earlier sections, you will begin to see some of the implications that will be amplified later on.

This doesn’t mean that you sit down behind a desk and study as you do in university. It is not about repeating the words until you can repeat them without thinking. It means that the activity of your mind has to be involved in this. Your mind is not neutral, you think all the time. Your thoughts have to be included in with this course, it is there that the change will take place. It is there that you can give the little effort of preparation, the little willingness, so that God can take the last step and you are not bound by fear of your own making.

Some of the later steps in this course involve a more direct approach to God Himself. It would be unwise to start on these steps without careful preparation, or awe will be confused with fear, and the experience will be more traumatic than beatific.

What Jesus offers you here is the power of your mind in this course. He is asking you to pay attention, while at the same time stressing the importance of preparation. He shows you the little effort that will help you in this course in mind training. They are simple instructions, but incredibly powerful.

Healing is of God in the end. The means are being carefully explained to you. Revelation may occasionally reveal the end to you, but to reach it the means are needed.

The means are provided by you. The little practice, the willingness to be vigilant. In the practice of the workbook, in doing the lessons every day, there is always the tendency to forget the lesson during the day. Jesus tells you not to worry about it, you simply start over. But in these last two days he again mentions the power of preparation and adds the gift of careful watching.

Lesson 136 ~ Sickness is a defense against the truth

The body’s health is fully guaranteed, because it is not limited by time, by weather or fatigue, by food and drink, or any laws you made it serve before. You need do nothing now to make it well, for sickness has become impossible.
Yet this protection needs to be preserved by careful watching. If you let your mind harbor attack thoughts, yield to judgment or make plans against uncertainties to come, you have again misplaced yourself, and made a bodily identity which will attack the body, for the mind is sick.

Lesson 137 ~ When I am healed, I am not healed alone

We will remember, as the hour strikes, our function is to let our minds be healed, that we may carry healing to the world, exchanging curse for blessing, pain for joy, and separation for the peace of God. Is not a minute of the hour worth the giving to receive a gift like this? Is not a little time a small expense to offer for the gift of everything?
Yet must we be prepared for such a gift.

It is not enough to simply practice the lesson in the morning and then go about your day thinking God will take care of the rest. Your mind is required in this. It is up to you to remember that nothing you see means anything, and that is only lesson 1. Whenever your mind wanders into judgment, it is up to you to call it back and remember this course. You decide to apply the lessons and the text to get the full benefit of A Course In Miracles. Call it vigilance, call it keeping your eye on the ball, but if you don’t apply the lesson, if you don’t actively remember that you are as God created you, no one is going to do it for you.

So today, listen to Jesus. Apply the lesson as he requests and give yourself the gift of heaven, of your awakening. You are always tempted to be satisfied with far too little. Today, give yourself the gift of everything through preparation and careful watching.

I have invented the world I see

Today we are continuing to develop the theme of cause and effect. You are not the victim of the world you see because you invented it. You can give it up as easily as you made it up. You will see it or not see it, as you wish. While you want it you will see it; when you no longer want it, it will not be there for you to see.

The world you see is your invention. You have made up everything you see and you sustain the world through your thoughts about it. Every idea you have about what you see is simply wrong. The reason is:

1. Nothing I see means anything
2. I have given what I see all the meaning it has for me
3. I do not understand anything I see
4. These thoughts do not mean anything
5. I am never upset for the reason I think
6. I am upset because I see what is not there
7. I see only the past
8. My mind is preoccupied with past thoughts
9. I see nothing as it is now
10. My thoughts do not mean anything
11. My meaningless thoughts are showing me a meaningless world.
12. I am upset because I see a meaningless world
13. A meaningless world engenders fear
14. God did not create a meaningless world
15. My thoughts are images that I have made
16. I have no neutral thoughts
17. I see no neutral things
18. I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my seeing
19. I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my thoughts
20. I am determined to see
21. I am determined to see things differently
22. What I see is a form of vengeance
23. I can escape from this world by giving up attack thoughts.
24. I do not perceive my own best interest
25. I do not know what anything is for
26. My attack thoughts are attacking my invulnerability
27. Above all else I want to see
28. Above all else I want to see differently
29. God is in everything I see
30. God is in everything I see because God is in my mind
31. I am not the victim of the world I see
32. I have invented the world I see

It really is as simple as applying the lessons. They speak for themselves. They are the undoing of you as you see yourself in an identity separate from God. You literally feel yourself dissolve into God as you apply these ideas to yourself, to your mind. Be willing not to know anything and to let all things be revealed to you. That is all that is required.

I have invented this situation as I see it.

I have invented the world I see.

I have given everything I see all the meaning that it has for me.

An untrained mind can accomplish nothing.

It’s an amazing sentence, and one that gets glossed over so easily. You, as you see yourself, can accomplish nothing. It does take a mind training to see things differently, it does take the willingness to apply the lesson that you have given everything you see all the meaning that it has for you.

It’s easy to get complacent, even when you are doing this Course. You know all the words, you have memorized sentences and may even know all the lessons by heart: it’s all meaningless. What matters is the experience, and unless you are in a constant experience of God, there really is nothing going on.

There seems to be, in this moment, a feeling of starting something new. It’s what you have done all your life. Starting something different, the short energy jolt of something seemingly new, thereby forgetting that in this world it is all the same with the same outcome. All you have to do is teach this message, that is your function. You are a Teacher of God. You have been given great models for awakening, Jesus and the Master Teacher and other awakened minds, who did nothing but give themselves away every single day. The constancy is key, the willingness to show up no matter what and extend your light, so you can recognize it as yours. There are no breaks in your awakening, no holidays, no sleep-in days, no days of not showing up. You are the one. Yes, really.

You are the one.

So practice the lesson for today. It won’t hurt you. Yes, you have done it all before… Yes, you know all the words… Practice it anyway. It has a whole lot to offer you. Everything lies waiting for your decision to see things anew.

I have given everything I see in this room [on this street, from this window, in this place] all the meaning that it has for me.
